Marques Toliver in the Guardian

Twenty-four-year-old singer and violinist Marques Toliver seems to have a fortuitous backstory. Born in South Daytona, Toliver moved to New York where he started busking, earning roughly $80 for three hours' work. While performing he was approached by Kyp Malone from TV On the Radio who suggested he work with the band on some songs (he has also played with Grizzly Bear). Fellow TVOTR member Dave Sitek then introduced him to Holly Miranda, whose touring band he joined briefly before moving to London in 2009. Bet he's pleased he took up busking, eh? Since moving to the UK he's been signed by Bella Union, and his debut EP, Butterflies Are Not Free, is out on 25 April. So what does he sound like? Deep in My Heart sighs and soars, Toliver's lush singing reminiscent of both Marvin Gaye and Maxwell, while plucked violin and autoharp create a sometimes jagged, sometimes pillowy sound. The rest of the EP is just as good.

Ancestors

I saw a star above me and yes it was so lovely because it showed me to your soul and now I know you are the one for me. Feels like I died and went to heaven. My body is shaking and I can't help it. You helped me break down all these walls now I don't fell so lonely.

If I never lived this life again,I f I told you to take my hand, would the people understand? Said I was on a journey to find out why love hurts. All the king's horses and all the kings men, couldn't put you together again.

In the flash of a moment all my fears were open. Standing right in front of me these obstacles they can't take my resolve to save you. I will find you my love.Cause I'm gonna take it to the next level. Raise the bass, the mids, and the treble. I got a fire burning inside me, don't know if you can handle. Feels like I died and went to heaven. My body is shaking and I can't help it. You helped me break down all these walls now I don't feel so lonely.

I f I never lived this life again,I f I told you to take my hand, would the people understand? Said I was on a journey to find out why love hurts. All the king's horses and all the kings men, couldn't put you together again.

Take one step don't look back.

I got to keep my mind free just to keep on walking even if 'm all alone.
I wont let nobody ever try to stop me.
I've got to keep track of my soul.
Despise me if you want to, but I know that you will never win.
Baptise me if you want to, but I'll never be the same again.
Deep in my heart I know its right and my enemies they try to break me
Btu I wont give up without a fight, I got to keep on pressing on
Take one step don't look, back take one step don't look back.

There's power is your sorrow.
You'll see tomorrow, take you places you don't know
It led me up to heaven now they say I"m ready and its time to let it go.

The day before I was an old man.

I awoke to the music.
The curtain spills onto the floor.
The sounds of the piano and a voice.
Soft sheets and brisk northern air.
A day of celebration.
A time to share and experience.

The previous day I was so old.
Now, I am a new born.

Question about Bermuda

Sitting out on the fire escape high of india.
I can hear water falling from the shower near by
I man across the street makes his bed with a with only a tooth brush in his mouth.
It is apparent that the weather will change.
My heels pressed against the rusty metals.
In the other room he sits, neglected from my touch.

In the morning I want to feel inspired
Mysteries of the Buddha
Questions about the hurricanes of Bermuda.
